we drove past the Work Abroad Expo in Silversprings today, just as it was opening.

I heard that so many people turned up, they were turning away people from joining the queue an hour after it opened!

We paid a visit to Fota Gardens today. It’s a smashing place to go for a quiet walk amongst some really spectacular gardens.

just don’t fall in!

it’s free to walk around the grounds, you only have to pay €3 for the car park on exit.

buying local this Christmas

I had planned to write this blog post a few days ago, but Billy Lyons beat me to the punch with his blog post on buying Irish. I’m changing it slightly to “buying local”.
I’ve done most of my Christmas shopping, and about half of it is coming from local suppliers, and local producers where possible.
I’ve bought my presents from local suppliers (that I can’t name without spoiling surprises!)

The Christmas wine is coming from Curious Wines, I’ve bought a lovely Christmas Pudding from Fenn’s Quay restaurant. I bought some last year too and they were fantastic. I’ve sent one to my aunt and am shipping another to Switzerland!

We’ll be placing an order with Local Markets, a brilliant new co-operative in Cork, delivering produce from local suppliers and producers. It’s like a farmers market in your kitchen!

It’s something I intend to do a lot more of, buying local where possible. There’s such good quality produce and brilliant customer service available in Cork that I really want to support it.

Every year naval ships arrive in Cork Harbour for the Jazz weekend. This weekend sees a number of ships in from a Nato minesweeper exercise, as well as LE Orla of the Irish Naval Service.

I’ve seen lads fly fishing here before – just by the River Lee (formerly Jury’s) hotel.
There’s plenty of small trout there – maybe they’ll get the big one!

upcoming sicilian wine tasting in Fenns Quay

On Monday 26th July at @19:30 Fenns Quay are hosting a Sicilian dinner and wine tasting.

“We have a four course dinner paired with six different wines. The price is €50 which includes the food and wine (Plenty of it!!). There will be a draw at the end of the night when one lucky attendee will win a 6 bottle mixed case of wine.”

sounds like it’ll be a great night – I’ll be there.
