thanks for all the help

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

I wanted to to say thanks to everyone who helped out in the floods.
While I was walking around taking photos, members of the Emergency services (Fire, Gardai and Ambulance) were everywhere, helping. I could see what I think were council workers in high vis carrying radios all over the place, closing roads and helping with traffic.
The workers in UCC who managed miracles in evacuating students, helping to keep the damage to a minimum and who have done so much to get things back on track. The hundreds in the Council who’re working flat out to restore services to the city. The councillors and politicians who have worked outside their remit to help people. And everyone who helped a neighbour, friend or stranger out. It makes me proud to be a corkman. Thanks all of you.

Good Wine Show

Friday, November 13th, 2009

I went along to day one of the Good Wine Show, held in the Clarion Hotel in Cork.

Three of Ireland’s premier independant wine retailers were showing their wares:

Curious Wines
Mike

Karwig Wines
Karwigs

Bubble Brothers
Julian

There was also some gourmet food to try:

There was an excellent turn out

The mood was fantastic. There were some brilliant wines on offer, and the super friendly atmosphere made for a relaxed event. It was very easy to try to various wines on offer, and some of the suppliers had travelled to the event. It’s lovely to meet the people that actually make the product on offer, and hear them talk with pride about the area their wines come from, and how they actually make the wines.

If you’re in Cork tomorrow – head along. It’ll be a great day out on what’s likely to be a miserable day. It’s a lovely venue too, and from the conference room you get a nice view of the river.

new Gamestop open on Patrick street

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Gamestop opened its new store on Patrick St. in Cork this morning.
The first 5 PS3s and 10 Xboxes sold were on sale at half price.

crowds at the new Gamestop on Patrick St.

I figure there was just about exactly 15 people in the queue, so they might have all gotten the consoles they wanted at half price.

save the kino

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

The Kino Cinema in Cork is in danger of closing down.

There’s a Facebook Group with lots of information on a campaign to save the Kino. I hope you can help.

I like the idea of public ownership – I’d chip in!

for the benefit of foreign readers. our Ceann Comhairle, the guy who sort of keeps order in the Dail (our parliment) has been exposed as a money grabbing tool, screwing the irish taxpayer for every last cent he can.
